Mitigating climate change and adapting to it are probably the greatest challenges of the 21st century. The activities of the human species (use of fossil fuels, emission of climate-active substances such as methane or carbon dioxide in factory farming and meat production) are increasingly accelerating global warming. Continuously rising average temperatures on planet earth cause extreme weather events, the extinction of species and a rise in sea water levels. Efforts in the field of marine conservation or agriculture (cultivation, transport, processing, trade and consumption) play a central role in reducing greenhouse gases and effective climate protection. As they also act as important natural CO2 reservoirs, the global conservation and regeneration of productive and species-rich habitats such as oceans, forests or peatlands is as important. A key point of the work of the Stiftung Zukunft jetzt! is to drive the change to a food and agriculture system that is better for the environment and kinder to animals and that encourages the change to a more plant-based diet. In general, this means: less animal husbandry = less greenhouse gas emissions. In the area of climate protection, we support national and international projects which focus on:
the reduction of global meat consumption and factory farming and
at the same time more production of plant-based food
ecologically regenerative agricultural principles and practices that give the highest priority to developing and maintaining soil fertility and regenerating ecosystems
sustainable agriculture and food management
educational opportunities with insights into the interconnections of ecological land management and the production of healthy food for schoolchildren and adults
protection of (primeval) forests and sustainable reforestation
protection and restoration of nature, wilderness areas and biodiversity
sustainable fishing and protection of the oceans
renewable energies
making the financing of environmental destruction and human rights violations visible and naming those responsible (e.g. investors and funders of fossil fuel projects) - ‘Follow the money’.
protection and re-wetting of peatlands
(environmental) education as one of the key factors for the necessary transformation
promotion of sustainable, ‘green’ degree courses
Anyone who sees growth as a prerequisite for prosperity sees environmental and climate protection as a threat to prosperity. But this way of thinking is long outdated.
