About the foundation

The Albert Schweitzer Foundation focuses on the area in which humans cause by far the most suffering and death: the use of animals and animal products as food. In countries like Germany, it is not necessary for a healthy diet to allow animals to suffer and die for the production of food. This is why the Albert Schweitzer Foundation promotes the vegan/plant-based diet as the best ethical solution at present.

As there is currently no foreseeable end to the use of animals as a source of food, the Foundation is also working towards less torturous breeding, keeping and killing of animals and a gradual reduction in the consumption of animal products.

What and why we fund

In order for the work of the Albert Schweitzer Foundation to have maximum impact, it develops campaigns with a leverage effect with the help of scientific findings.

For example, the European Broiler Chicken Initiative campaigns for less suffering in chicken farming, e.g. reduced stocking densities, less over-breeding and employment opportunities for the animals.

The cage-free campaign is fighting for a ban on caged eggs in the food industry, which are often still imported despite the ban on cage farming and are used as an ingredient in a number of foods.

Reduction of animal products

To help companies expand their plant-based offerings, the Albert Schweitzer Foundation carries out vegan rankings that rate companies according to their vegan-friendliness. The comparison helps to ensure that the companies at the bottom of the rankings expand their vegan offering and that the winners strive to maintain their pioneering position.

Vegan-Taste-Week serves to spread the plant-based lifestyle. Here, interested people are given a helping hand and can easily get to know the plant-based diet. You can sign up for the newsletter on the website and receive regular updates with delicious and cruelty-free recipes.

The funds are used to expand the company's work. The broiler chicken campaigns and animal product reduction in particular benefit from the funding, which helps to reduce animal suffering and spread the plant-based diet.
