Why we fund
The feature film Matilda examines our relationship with farm animals and encourages empathy and a shift in societal thinking. In addition to the relevance of its content, the project stands out for the example it sets on set: 100% vegan catering, green filming standards, and the highest standards in working with Ella the cow combine artistic excellence with consistent ethical responsibility.

What we fund
The Stiftung Zukunft jetzt!, together with other foundations and German film funding agencies, is providing financial support for the project’s production. Following the successful filming in August and September 2025 in North Rhine-Westphalia and Bavaria, this funding will enable the editing, music composition, sound design, and the creation of accessible versions, in order to convey the film’s ethical message to a wide audience.
About the film
Eighteen-year-old Anna lives with her father, Robert—both trapped by the unresolved trauma of her mother’s accidental death two years ago. While Robert scrapes by working at a slaughterhouse, Anna runs the household. Their already fragile relationship is thrown into complete turmoil when she tries to rescue a runaway cow. While Robert is forced by his boss to coordinate the hunt for the animal, she manages to hide the cow in the woods. Plagued by nightmares and growing despair, Anna spirals into a crisis. A dramatic discovery finally forces father and daughter to confront their repressed past and their grief over her mother’s death.
